DIY Birdseed House
Dylan wanted to make the birdhouse as well but we were a little pressed for time this year and we happened to see these houses at Hobby Lobby for 50% off, so it worked out perfect! Dylan just added the little eye hooks at the top of the house before I got started.
I was walking through the antique mall and saw a booth with some miniature birdhouses covered in birdseed and I absolutely loved them!! I figured it should be easy enough to replicate and give one as a Christmas gift to my grandparents - and you guys, it was soo easy and so fun to do.. and messy !!
Step by Step:
Heat up your water until its very hot but not boiling.
Stir in the 2 packets of gelatin until all dissolved. Then let it cool for 5-10 minutes.
Brush on the gelatin and quickly press on birdseed.
The longer the gelatin cools, the goopier it gets which can make it easier to spread. But too-cooled will start to solidify. You can always reheat the gelatin for 5 seconds in the microwave too!I did about 2 passes for gelatin and seed. I let one coat set overnight and then went back to fill gaps and do the roof. The gelatin dries pretty clear so you don’t need to be very tidy.
I used the gelatin to set on the fence and decor as well. Then it’s done!
What you need:
Wooden Birdhouse (hooks and wire to hang from)
Birdseed (I used a songbird blend with sunflower seeds and a hot pepper blend to deter squirrels!)
2 packets of Knox unflavored gelatin
1/2 cup hot water
Brush
Optional decorations (I pulled real moss from the backyard, found a little dollhouse fence and some dried flowers)
