Painting Our Fireplace

Sometimes, you gotta try it all…

When we moved in last July, the fireplace was something we knew we had to tackle early on. But I went through a lot of ideas that I couldn’t fully narrow down. I liked the idea of black, white, green, or tan - and I literally couldn’t figure out which direction would be best. So here’s how it all went down.

When we moved in..

This is what our fireplace looked like on the day we moved in. It was painted an off-white and it had some pretty bad discoloration. So this is why I knew it was going to be a priority. And yes, there was no mantle, so if you’re curious on how we built and hung our own mantle, check out this post.

Back in August..

After we painted all of the walls white, I wanted to jump in on the fireplace. I chose to go with a tan that was similar to our rug at the time. I liked it.. but I didn’t love it. So we knew we were going to try another color sometime soon.

My next experiment..

A total dud. I wanted to give black a try. There were so many things I hated about the black.. the color tone of this paint was not what I was envisioning and it really weighed the room down in a very odd way. I’m all for weight and contrast but something about this was not working. So I immediately jumped into a different idea..

So I got a little crafty..

I ended up painting the fireplace the same color as our walls which felt better.. but I still wanted something extra. So I came across this photo from Studio McGee and fell in love with these accented bricks. So I grabbed some of the black paint that I had left over, used an oil brush paint from the studio and started shading in some of the bricks.

And I was finally happy..

I absolutely love the subtle quirk that those accented bricks give our fireplace now. This fireplace finally feels like it belongs in the room and I feel so at peace.

It’s a success..

Eventually, I do want to go back in and give those accent bricks a little bit extra, I think they deserve it. But for now, this is exactly where I wanted to be. So if you feel like you’ve been stuck and can’t decide the route to take, I say to take them all and eventually you’ll figure it out!
