We Bought a House!
It’s finally happening! For a backstory, Dylan and I moved here to Memphis last year in July and we’ve been living in a rental home. We plan to stay here for a few years before moving somewhere new and we’ve been having such a hard time finding a new rental home that meets our needs. So we decided to fully commit and buy our first home!
The process started out incredible scary for me as I had no idea what I was doing or what this all entails. We worked with Captain + Co Realty and I cannot sing enough praises for them. Fara was so incredible at making sure I was asking all the right questions and I even cried once at one of the showing because nothing we looked at felt right. She completely put me at ease.
And then we found this house. Built in the 80’s with only a couple of owners and placed on the perfect little street in the perfect area (only 3 minutes from our go-to park + trails!). When we looked at the house, there were a few other couples meandering around so we knew we had to place a bid immediately. And we got the call shortly after that we got the house!
The first thing we noticed when we walked in was this beautiful living room with crazy amounts of natural light and the beam - I was in love. After looking at a lot of houses, I knew that we’d be putting in work to whatever house we got. So I was fully prepared to rip all of the wainscoting and trims from the walls.
*As a note, all of the furniture shown is from the sellers. They’re moving back to Vietnam the day of closing so as you can see, they’re living with the absolute minimum.
The master bedroom is massive with theses beautiful cove windows overlooking the backyard. The hardwood is throughout the entire house and I have ALWAYS wanted hardwood. I’ve never had anything but carpet my entire life!
The master bathroom is one of the largest bathrooms I’ve ever seen.. and it doesn’t have one inch of natural light. I guess that’s the trade off for having so much light around the entire house. I love the idea of installing a sky tunnel in here but that’s an idea for another day.
The kitchen.. needs work. It’s a great size and it’s wrapped with windows that let the sunset literally pour into here. When we looked at the house, it was around 6pm and the golden light that draped this room was a massive selling point for me.
The galley kitchen was installed incredibly too close together. So our biggest project of the house is going to be gutting this kitchen and replacing the center with an island that is pushed back at least 6”. Another very nerve-wracking thought but both Dylan and I are very optimistic about it.
We also have a guest room and a guest bathroom on the opposite side of the house. I’m so excited to gut this bathroom and make it a little spa for our friends and families. We had a guest bedroom at the rental house but we never had beds.. we only had air mattresses. So I’m very excited to make this a real guest bedroom.
Not pictured is our office as well. We have a small room on the front of the house next to the guest bath for our office. We both have a feeling it’s going to be the last room worked on.
And finally, our backyard. It’s slightly smaller than our massive yard at the rental but that one was honestly too big. So this feels perfect. There’s a tiny patio that we plan to extend and we plan to remove the playset and put a paved firepit in that area. You can see a small fence near there too - they call it a dog run but we plan to make that side a full on garden. Multiple raised beds, a couple of trellises, and a potting station where it connects to the garage. It’s a dream come true.
I cannot wait to move in and get started on all of our projects. Until next time!
